It’s the new year, and I have a long list of books I’ve been meaning to read and aim to get to in 2019. So I wanted to create a list of books that I predict will be 5 stars! I know that every book I pick up, I want to love… but it’s more likely that books are rated 3 or 4 stars, and it actually is quite difficult to try and predict what books you’re gonna LOVE. I was able to guess correctly last year when I read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo for a readathon prompt ‘a book you predict will be 5 stars’, and ever since then I’ve had the idea to try and predict some more 5 star reads! Here are the main one I can think of!
HISTORICAL FICTION; FANTASY; RUSSIAN FOLKLORE
I have had this on my shelf for a very long time, because the hype built around this series is crazy. My main reason for buying this was because of the stunning hardcover edition which I fell in love with! Since then, I have heard nothing but good things about this book. Seriously, not one bad review from people I follow. It promises to be very atmospheric and set in the Russian wilderness which sounds incredible. I heard it is heavily based on old Russian fairy tales/folk-lore and it’s one of my favourite storylines/tropes. I just have a good feeling about this book and the trilogy.
HISTORICAL FICTION; HORROR; ZOMBIES; FANTASY
This book only recently came onto my radar when I attempted Lala’s readathon of her favourite books and I saw this was featured in her favourite book recommendations. It promises to be gory and in a historic and atmospheric setting which are things I love in books. Pitched as an alternative-history zombie sci-fi where a Zombie apocalypse ends the Civil War and black people are free but become subject to a system that places them as trained zombie fighters to protect white people. It’s set on or around the same time as the American Civil War which is apart of history I studied and love and I find the added fantastical/horror elements really interesting. Highly anticipated but also trying not to hype it up too much in my mind!
ADULT; FANTASY; SCIENCE FICTION; PARANORMAL
One of the main reasons this is on my list is because everything V. E. Schwab writes is like gold to me. The premise of self-made ‘superheroes’ and the grey area of good vs evil power sounds so interesting! It promises to show the dark side of power and villains, I really feel like this is the dark villain book I’ve been waiting for. So many Booktubers, whose opinions I trust and are similar to mine, have loved this book so I can’t see a reason why I wouldn’t fall in love with the book and this story. I have enough faith that I will love this that I got the exclusive editions of Vicious and Vengeful… let’s hope that’s a good sign!
ADULT; FANTASY; MILITARY; HISTORICAL FICTION; CHINA
I suddenly caught wind of this book when a Booktuber who rarely rates books higher than 4 stars gave this a rave review, and I knew then that I had to read it. The story is something I haven’t heard before, and it focuses on China and it’s history which I am very interested in. From what I’ve heard, it doesn’t have any of the tropes that I dislike in books, and it seems to be very gritty and dark, which I just can’t get enough of! The only reason I haven’t picked this up is because it is over 500 pages and I am frickin’ scared… I might try and pick it up around the release of the sequel, and perhaps the reviews of the second book will be more of a push for me to pick it up..? I hope so!
YOUNG ADULT; CONTEMPORARY; LGBT; SOCIAL ISSUES
It is very strange for me to put a YA contemporary into my 5 star predictions. But what I’ve heard about this book, sounds right up my alley. I love books that focus on a tough topic, especially ones of social importance right now. And this book is heavily focused on rape culture about a girl who’s brother is accused of sexually assaulting her best friends, and the difficult position it put her in; does she believe her brother, or her best friend? From what I’ve heard, the issues of rape culture are handled and dealt with extremely well and I have heard a lot of praise on the messages within the book. So it has a lot of promise to be a new favourite. Hopefully it will deliver!
ADULT; FANTASY; SCIENCE FICTION; DYSTOPIA
I grew out of dystopians a few years ago when I was disappointed with the Divergent series, but I have heard that this series is a dystopian like no other and throws all dystopian tropes out of the window. Let’s just say that alone had me sold! It sounds like a fantasy series I would love and one which is so incredibly unique. A woman has to travel back to her home, which is now inhabitable, to find her husband who killed her son and has hold of her daughter. There are also mixes of fantasy, where supernatural beings can control the tremors and earth movements. It all sounds so interesting! I have been warned about the second person narrative in the first half, so hopefully that has prepared me and it would not put me off!
CLASSIC; LITERATURE; GOTHIC; HORROR; FANTASY
I must be insane for including a classic as a 5 star prediction. I love the premise of this story, and even those who don’t read classics so often (like me) have loved it! It’s such an intriguing premise – a man has a portrait done, and all the marks of age and imperfections are shown upon this portrait instead of him, so he can ‘preserve’ his beauty. Of course this goes wrong in some aspect and consider me interested! I also heard that the writing does not feel as dense and dry as a lot of classic literature. So I have high hopes! If I can’t enjoy this classic, then I might struggle to pick up anymore afterwards… so no pressure…
Again… Another contemporary! I have this on my list because the main character sounds so damn relatable. She’s socially awkward, introverted, and doesn’t fit into standard social norms. I have heard that the writing is divine and the story is so uplifting and entertaining, I feel that I will enjoy this so much! Reviews I’ve heard mention the words ‘hilarious’ and ‘heart-breaking’… two words that seem to draw me to books when included together. Apparently there is mental health rep which is a plus, and I’m not sure how true this is, but apparently the guy/girl relationship is platonic? It is this point I believe that would either make or break this book being 5 stars or not.
So those are the books I anticipate the most to become 5 stars reads for me! Have you read any of these? Which ones would you say I should prioritise above the others? What are your 5 star predictions? I’d love to know!
THANKS FOR READING!
